Trucking cut flowers along the highway is the most common form of transportation; this also represents a significant portion of the cost price for cut flowers. This becomes more evident if the flowers are to be moved over long distances.
Efficient packaging of the flowers is vital so they take up minimum space. Using every inch of space possible will ensure a direct savings on transportation costs.
It's also important to preserve the quality of the cut flowers. This means having the flowers stand in water, and allowing for cool air flow. The cold air is necessary to limit condensation and overheating.
Procona is ideal for the transportation of cut flowers by road as it enables a high load factor of packaged flowers, the cut flowers stand in water and the package is well ventilated.
Procona is also ideal for stacking on pallets so that the outer packaging (pallet) takes up minimum space. Conversely, using trolleys will waste a lot of space in trucks.
Using Procona as packaging for cut flowers in road-transport keeps the cost of cut flowers low and their quality perfect.
Procona packaging units are ideal for stacking on pallets. There are many different types of pallets, so please read on for our advice on the best options and methods for loading trucks.
Pallets
Pallets measuring 40" x 48" are the best choice for all sizes of Procona container. This size also ensures the best load factor on trucks.
Four-way pallets are ideal (these can be lifted on all four sides); two-way pallets are used for trucks with an interior cross section of less than 96"; the side openings must be at the 48" side.
Trucks
In most trucks the interior cross section (width) is 95". This allows 40" x 48" pallets to be loaded widthwise (2 x 48"). Trucks with an interior cross section of less than 95" have to be loaded in blocks - i.e. one row of pallets lengthwise and one row widthwise.
The number of pallets that fit in the truck also depends on the length of the truck (interior dimensions).
The illustration below shows two examples of loading patterns for:
1: truck with interior dimensions of more than 8" x minimum 40";
2: truck with interior dimensions less than 8" x minimum 40".
Load
Road transportation is used for short and long-haul destinations. For distances up to 350 miles we recommend standard collars for Procona. For distances over 350 miles, or trucking via the ferry, we advise super quality collars.
